Simplicity Manufacturing, Inc., was founded in 1922 by William J. Niederkorn in Port Washington, Wisconsin - a small, family-oriented community along the shores of Lake Michigan. The company has been making ride-on tractors since 1939 and snowthrowers since 1961. Walk behind tillers were first produced in 1955. On July 4, 2004, Briggs & Stratton Corporation acquired Simplicity Manufacturing and its companies Snapper, Ferris Industries and Giant-Vac. The purchase represents Briggs & Stratton’s first attempt to serve the lawn and garden industry directly. Briggs & Stratton believes this acquisition will allow it to build closer relationships with its OEM and retail customers from an operational, sales and marketing standpoint. Simplicity remains at its original site, manufacturing products for today's homeowners. The manufacturing facilities are being continually improved and modernized. Current technology provides the flexibility for the company to build a mix of products each day, and respond to changing consumer demands. The facilities include stamping, machining, welding, paint, assembly, and warehouse capabilities.

Snapper traces its roots back to 1894 as Southern Saw Works. Snapper introduced the industry’s first self-propelled rotary mower in 1951 and was an innovator of the rear engine riding mower. Today, Snapper manufactures premium lawn care and snow removal equipment for both residential and commercial customers including walk-behind mowers, rear engine riders, tractors, zero turn riders, commercial mowers, snowthrowing equipment, tillers, utility vehicles, generators and pressure washers.

STIHL Incorporated is one of seven manufacturing facilities in the STIHL Group. The Virginia Beach complex is located on over 80 acres with 700,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space. STIHL Incorporated employs approximately 1,600 people in a variety of positions from product assembly, manufacturing engineering, sales and marketing, and finance.

STIHL Incorporated began manufacturing at the Virginia Beach Facility in 1974 with the assembly of the 015 chain saws. The manufacturing area was expanded in 1983 and again in 1990 and in 2004 to its current size. In October of 1996, STIHL opened a new 50,000 square foot warehouse. In 2004 another warehouse facility of 135,000 square feet was opened to house finished goods for world wide distribution.
